Message from a Survivor

The word cancer is a powerful word, both mentally and emotionally.  When I was told that I had colon cancer a chill shot through my body.  At that moment, my life changed forever.  My next thought went back to 14 years before when my grandmother had been diagnosed with colon cancer.  The strength I saw in her helped me decide to do whatever it took to be a survivor.  I read all the information the doctors had given me.  Friends gave me information from the Internet and I heard countless stories of people who had survived cancer.  I discovered that I had become a member of a diverse and unique family.

Following surgery and recovery, I was told what to expect with chemotherapy and about its side effects.  It was a little overwhelming.  I was so thankful my husband was there during the session to help me process all the information I heard.  I decided that no matter what I encountered during chemo, it would be worth it to survive.  I had a great network of family, friends and most of all, an amazing team of doctors that were going to make sure I survived.

I can honestly say that this journey made me stronger and really taught me about myself.  I had so many people telling me how strong I was and how I made chemo look so easy to go through.  Yet I was thinking, if this is all I have to do to survive, then this is nothing compared to what a lot of people have to endure.  The advice I give in my experience with cancer is to learn as much as possible.

The information in this booklet will be a valuable tool to someone who has been newly diagnosed with colon cancer.  It is one of the most informative booklets on colon cancer that I have read.  I believe that this booklet is a solid basis for educating yourself about the many treatments and options you have.
